Why Do Manga Character Profiles Always Include Blood Type

Blood type personality theory is a popular belief in Japan (and some other East Asian countries), applied in the same way that astrological signs or other personality models (such as the Myers-Briggs or the Enneagram) are used in the west. Japanese morning shows and newspapers will have daily blood type horoscope segments, celebrities will always list blood type on their profiles, and it is also commonly used as a compatibility indicator by matchmaking services....

Why Horror Books Just Aren T That Scary

But this is Book Riot, not Movie Riot. I read WAY more books than I watch movies. I’ve read my share of horror books. Probably your share and a couple of other shares, too. But unlike movies or even TV shows, I’ve never been really scared by a book. One paragraph can go into detail about a derelict house, the ominous clouds, and the sounds of a nearly empty highway in the distance....

How Do You Get Your Ideas Authors Answers To The Eternal Question

Harlan Ellison famously answered a similarly phrased question, “Where do you get your ideas?” with the breathtakingly simple “Schenectady.” Neil Gaiman, author of Neverwhere and Coraline, is asked so frequently that he wrote a whole essay on the question. In it, he says: In an interview for her book A Room Away From The Wolves, Nova Ren Suma said: Mercedes Lackey, author of the Valdemar series, once said: The late author Joan Aiken, who wrote The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, wrote: Lisa Kleypas, author of Devil in Disguise, answered: Christine Hyung-Oak Lee, author of the memoir Tell Me Everything You Don’t Remember, wrote about ideas as part of the creative process: KJ Charles, author of Think of England, wrote a short essay about inspiration: Andrea Davis Pinkney, author of Martin Rising, told Scholastic: Stephen Graham Jones, author of The Only Good Indians, wrote about why he writes and touched on inspirations: Jacqueline Woodson, author of Brown Girl Dreaming, wrote about writers block and ideas: Some authors have fewer ideas....

Superhero Problems So Your Mentor Sucks At Their Job

But while sidekicks may be a standard part of the superhero experience, not everyone is cut out to be a mentor. There’s no shame in that, unless you take your problems out on the person who looked up to and was counting on you, thus screwing them up psychologically for the rest of their lives. To be a great mentor, you have to do more than teach a kid to throw punches and spout quips while dodging bullets: you have to support them when things go wrong....

10 Best Cross Stitch Books For Beginner And Advanced Stitchers Alike

There are two elements that make up the best cross stitch books. The first is instruction on cross stitch techniques and the second is charts. Almost every cross stitch book will be a combination of both; what separates the beginning books from the intermediate or advanced books is the proportion of each. Beginning books will have a lot of instruction, usually a section set aside to learn the basics as well as some directions included with the charts....

10 Best Mysteries With A Twist

Of course, the best mysteries with a twist are those that surprise you but are rooted in the story. We don’t want a big twist that comes out nowhere kinda like a Deus ex machina. Much like the clues for the murderer should be littered throughout for the reader, a good twist needs to have clues that give the reader a fighting chance…even if it is tiny. While there are some pretty prominent examples of mysteries with big twists (I’m looking at you Agatha Christie), I’m including more recently published or translated works that have big twists....

10 Great Ya Books About Complicated Sister Relationships

I loved her and hated her in equal measure, I think. Especially as a teen. As much as we fought in our own house, we presented a united front to the world.
